Kappy & Q
Legend of the Riverbank: Meet the Kappa.
In the deep rivers of Japan, legends speak of the Kappa—a mischievous water yōkai (spirit) that is part turtle, part duck, and entirely unpredictable. These ancient creatures are famous for the “sara” on their heads: a small dish that must remain filled with water to give them strength.
In Miyo’s “How to Die in Japan” series, we’re bringing these water spirits into the modern world through a retro, mid-century lens. Whether they’re being polite or pulling pranks, the Kappa are Japan’s most iconic neighbors.
Meet Kappy
Don’t Worry, Be Kappy.
Meet Kappy, the most confident Kappa in the river! With his chest puffed out and a knowing grin, Kappy is all about good vibes and retro style. His head dish—a “sara”—is less of a bowl and more of a halo, proving that staying happy is the best way to keep your power up.
Meet Q
Stay Curious, Stay Q.
This is Q, the kappa with a mind as busy as a pond in bloom. Unlike his confident friend Kappy, Q is all about the questions. His wild, curly hair and the lily pads sprouting from his head show that he’s always thinking, always growing, and maybe just a little bit unconventional.

Join the “How To Die In Japan” Series
Welcome to the official debut of Kappy and Q, the first two residents of our How To Die In Japan universe. While their names might sound modern, their roots go back centuries into the murky rivers of Japanese folklore.
Why “How To Die In Japan”?
This series isn’t just about fashion—it’s about the beautiful, strange, and sometimes dark intersection of tradition and modern life. Kappy and Q are your guides through this landscape, proving that even a mythical river imp can have a lot of style.
What is a Kappa?
To understand Kappy and Q, you have to meet the Kappa—Japan’s most famous water yōkai (spirit). Often described as a cross between a duck and a turtle, these mischievous creatures are known for:
The Shell
A sturdy turtle shell on their backs to protect them on their adventures.
The Beak
A duck-like face perfect for snacking on their favorite food: cucumbers.
The Sara
The most important part—the water-filled dish on top of their heads. If the water spills, the Kappa loses its strength!
And we’re not done yet! More fun items are on the way.
